Lighting the Diyas
Maya: "Akash, why are you hiding behind the curtain? Come help me arrange the diyas!"
Akash: "I don’t want to. Everyone will look at me if I go near the window."
Maya: "They’re busy making rangoli, not staring at you. See? Even the aunties forgot about us."
Amma: "What happened, you two? The oil is ready, the wicks are ready, but my helpers are missing."
Maya: "Akash is acting all shy-shy again. Like a scared cat."-shy again. Like a scared cat."
Akash: "I’m not scared! I just… don’t feel like talking to all the guests."
Amma: "It’s okay to feel shy, kanna. But the diyas will feel lonely without you."
Maya: "Come on, we’ll light just one diya together and then you can run back if you want."
Akash: "Fine. Only one. And don’t call my name loudly."
Maya: "Look, the flame is dancing! It’s like it’s winking at you."
Akash: "It really is… It’s like the diya is being coy, hiding and peeking at us."
Amma: "Ah, a coy little flame, playing hide-and-seek in the breeze."
Maya: "Just like you were being coy behind the curtain."
Akash: "Maybe. But now I want to light all the diyas. The coy flame and the coy boy can work together."
Maya: "Deal! But after that, no more hiding. Just a tiny bit of coy, okay?"
Akash: "Okay. Just a tiny bit. The rest of me will shine like the diyas."
