A Walk Through the Neighborhoods
On Sunday morning, Amma took Meera’s hand. “Today we will walk through the neighborhoods,” she said.
Exploring the First Neighborhood
First was their own lane. The neighborhood smelled of filter coffee and hot idlis. The milkman’s cycle bell went tring-tring, and Meera waved.
Discovering New Surroundings
They turned the corner into another neighborhood. Here, houses were tall, with shiny cars sleeping below. A watchman dozed in a plastic chair, radio whispering an old song.
Playing Cricket
Farther on, a third neighborhood waited. Small houses leaned close together. Jasmine strings hung like white smiles. Children played cricket with a plastic bat.
Meera hesitated. “Can I play too?” she whispered. “Of course,” Amma smiled.
A Joyful Moment
At the turning point of the game, when Meera hit the ball high, all the neighborhoods seemed to cheer together.
Feeling Connected
Walking home, Meera squeezed Amma’s hand. “The whole city feels like our big, friendly neighborhood now.”
