Market Day
On market day, the townsfolk filled the lane like a bright, chattering river. There was the flower-seller with jasmine in her hair, the tailor with a tape around his neck, and the old uncle who always smelled of cardamom tea.
Meera's Experience
Meera stood at her mother’s snack stall, clutching a steel plate. “Too many people,” she whispered. “I feel small.”
Just then, the power went off. The fans stopped. The loudspeaker died. The townsfolk groaned in the sudden, sticky heat.
Meera took a breath. She cupped her hands and called, “Hot bajjis! Come in a line, one by one!”
The townsfolk turned. They laughed, fanned themselves with their hands, and formed a neat queue. Coins clinked, oil sizzled, and Meera’s chest felt warm and proud.
The lane buzzed again, bright and busy, like a happy river.
