Meera's School Culture Day
Meera: "Dida, can I wear your green skirt for School Culture Day?"
Dida: "This old skirt? It’s loose, beta. And very unfashionable."
Meera: "But it’s so soft! And it smells like jasmine and your soap."
Ma: "Your blue dress from last Diwali is ready. That one is stylish."
Meera: "Everyone has shiny dresses, Ma. I don’t want shiny."
Dida: "When I was small, I wore this skirt to the temple fair. People laughed."
Meera: "They laughed because it was unfashionable?"
Dida: "Yes. They had new city frocks. My simple skirt looked boring to them."
Meera: "I don’t think it’s boring. I like how it whooshes when I spin."
Ma: "Your friends might say it’s old and unfashionable, Meera."
Meera: "They can say that. I’ll say it’s my dancing skirt."
Dida: "Are you sure, beti? This unfashionable girl will be my brave peacock?"
Meera: "Yes! Pin it tight, please. I’ll walk proud, like in the school parade."
Ma: "Okay then. Unfashionable skirt, very special girl."
Meera: "I’ll make unfashionable look wonderful."
