A Conversation About Treasures
Maya: "Adi, why are you holding that old steel dabba so carefully? It’s just a box."
Adi: "It’s not just a box. It’s Paati’s sweet box. She always kept laddus in it."
Maya: "But it’s empty now. You can use my new Spider-Man lunchbox instead."
Adi: "Spider-Man is cool, but this dabba smells like ghee and cardamom. Like Diwali at Paati’s house."
Maya: "I can’t smell anything. Only your socks."
Adi: "Very funny. When I open it, I remember her bangles clinking and her humming songs."
Maya: "Still, it’s all dented. Don’t you feel shy bringing it for the school picnic?"
Adi: "A little. Everyone has shiny things. But this one feels like it’s holding a hug."
Maya: "So you’d rather bring this old dabba than my brand new one?"
Adi: "Yes. It’s my treasured dabba. It makes my lemon rice taste like Paati made it."
Maya: "Hmm. I have a treasured thing too… my raggedy pink rabbit."
Adi: "The one with only one ear?"
Maya: "Yeah. Amma wanted to throw it, but I hid it in my cupboard like a secret."
Adi: "See? You get it! It’s not about looking new."
Maya: "Okay, but if someone laughs at your treasured dabba, I’ll share my chips only with you."
Adi: "Deal. And I’ll share my treasured lemon rice with you first."
Maya: "Then your treasured dabba can sit between us in the bus, like a VIP."
Adi: "Done. Our treasured things can be weird together."
