Meera's Performance
On Sunday morning, the house smelled of dosa and hot chutney. Amma hummed as she flipped them, her voice soft and sweet.
“Today you must sing at Paati’s birthday,” she told Meera. “You are our little vocalist.”
Meera liked singing alone on the terrace, with only the crows listening. But a room full of aunties and uncles? Her stomach felt full of butterflies, not dosa.
The Party
At the party, everyone clapped for cake. “Now, our vocalist will sing,” Appa announced.
Meera’s hands shook. She saw Paati’s hopeful eyes, shining like the ghee lamps. She took a breath. The first note came out tiny… then stronger.
Her song filled the room like warm sambar, cozy and familiar. When she finished, Paati wiped a happy tear.
“Our brave vocalist,” Paati whispered, hugging her tight.
